Europe has had an incredible impact on the planet in a myriad of ways. Its cities, despite not being the largest, are the most globally connected and important to global commerce, communications and culture. For this reason alone it is of great importance.
This is a very challenging and involved assignment. You and your partner (if you want one) are to research and present on an impact that Europe has had in a particular area of human endeavor, say fashion. You will have sufficient time to work on this. There are steps to it and at the end of each some sort of record of your efforts will be collected and documented.

Consider that the European Union is the largest, most integrated free trade agreement in the world. It is, thus far in human history, the only truly supranational organization in the world. See pages 88-89 of your text for a brief idea of the pros and cons of EU membership.
Here's your problem:
You are a member of the British Parliament. You have been given a free vote on the issue which follows. Sadly the Prime Minister is exercising closure so you have very little time. You have formed a committee examining a possible response to the question. But you only have one hour to prepare a response. You must come up with why the alternative you are looking at is a good idea.
Should the UK keep its membership to the EU?
There are three possible responses:
Stay in it (Members are: EU1)
Leave it. (Members are: EUGo)
Join NAFTA. (AngloAmericanEconModel)
Here is what you must do very quickly:
Come up with at least three reasons why your group's alternative is the right path to take for the UK.
Present those tasks in a visual format (Max time: 10 minutes)

Which European Country Am I?
Everybody loves a mystery. It's game time. You are to present clues of authentic detail during the activity in class. You should have created a total of twenty clues. These clues can be related to history, geographical or human features of the nation, or even to personalities. Obviously, you would start with your most challenging clue working your way to your least challenging clue.
In class you will be given a piece of paper with you nation on it. Keep this to yourself. You will need to use several websites to gather information about your nation.
For you to receive a complete grade you must post your clues for your nation in Which European Country Am I? when all students in the class have read their clues out.
Students who are able to guess your nation correctly after a clue receive the inverse value of that clue. For example, if a student answers the first of twenty clues by guessing the nation correctly they will get 20 points added to their grade, the fifth clue they get 16 points, etc. Game day is when we have completed all of the presentations for this unit's major presentation. That would be sometime next week.
Use the following sites: CIA World Factbook Country Watch Lonely Planet Destination Guide Geospy (The only game you can play after you have made some headway for research)
What you need to do in your research is find information:
geographic location
major bodies of water, mountain ranges . . . tourist attractions
type of government
language
capitol
population
type of economy (resources, trading partners, GNP . . .)
interesting trivia (home of “so and so” . . .)
important historical moment
Arrange your clues from most difficult to easiest. This is no easy task.

You have to read pp. 102-127. This marks the end of this chapter. As part of your conclusion of this you must complete this retrieval chart. Be sure to note the most important pieces of information from your text in it.
Play the map game of Europe While playing that, write in the correct names of the countries in Europe on your hard copy map. I will be giving you one for this.
